Hitting rock bottom
You know the people who have hit rock bottom in their eating disorder, or any addiction for that matter, because they all have one thing in common. They can recite the date that they found recovery as it is imprinted in their memory for life. They vividly remember the time that life became so desperate that they were willing to give up their behaviour and trade it for a better life. For some people, they are days from death while others are many years from it. However they have all decided they cant carry on in this manner any longer. | |
If you are at your rock bottom now I can assure you that given time you will see the positive side of having hit rock bottom. Today I can look back and see that although my rock bottom was a living hell, it actually gave me the willingness to turn my life around in a way I would never have believed you had you told me!

| Rock bottom is a desperate lonely place to be. You believe that you are the only one who has sunk to such places but I can assure you that many people have been there before you and are now living a wonderful life. Sadly for some people they never make it out and die from the disease. It is estimated that every day in England 200 people die from compulsive overeating / binge eating disorder. That is a lot of people who neednt have ended up losing their life, if only they were willing to reach out for help. But I do understand how difficult it is to reach out and ask for help because shame and embarrassment keep you locked into the vicious cycle of addiction. |
I used to think I was the only person in the world who binged my way through vast quantities of food, however once I turned for help I soon attended a support group and met lots of people who told the same story I did! Recovery involves working at the problem from several angles, one of which can be to attend a support for people who want recovery. There you will meet people who give you hope because you can see that they are living examples of how you really can change. If you dont have a local support group in your area go, there is an international support group called Overeaters Anonymous who have meetings all around the world, and even online meetings. You can find more information at http://www.oa.org
If you are at rock bottom please think seriously about reaching out for help. As my brother so aptly put it to me what have you got to lose?
