The Perfect Weight

Almost every dieter and eating disorder sufferer has an “ideal” weight where they believe life will be perfect when the target has been achieved. For some people their ideal weight is realistic while for other people, like someone suffering from anorexia their ideal weight can be fatal.

Why is that we have these magic weights where we think life will be perfect?  Perhaps we look at slim people and think they must feel so happy that nothing else in their lives can be wrong.  But life’s problems like bereavement, redundancy, terminal illness, house moves are not solely for those who believe they are overweight. They happen to slim people too.

Standing on the bathroom scales - an article written by online counsellor Alison Jenkins from Changing Lives Online Counselling Service

I will never forget sitting in a classroom when we were asked to shout out our ideal weight.  The lecturer pretended to not hear properly and replied “9 stone 1”, to which the respondent said “no, 9 stone”, she replied again “9 stone 1” …… her point was why are we so adamant that is has to be a set weight rather than 1lb heavier.

Perfectionist want the perfect everything. They will strive to be absolutely perfect, but the reality is there is no one on this earth who is perfect, nor will there ever be. We are all human beings who make many mistakes but hopefully as we mature we learn by those mistakes and don’t repeatedly make the same ones.

Weight obsession is one of the characteristics that go with eating disorders.  There are many people who will weight themselves many times a day and are literally ruled by the bathroom scales. Their whole mood is determined by the number on the scale.

If we think back through history, the prefect weight is a moving goal. If you lived a hundred years ago a voluptuous figure was seen as a sign of wealth and health.  However sadly today the size zero model is sought after.  Women are literally dying from starvation as they try to reach a weight that is far from healthy. Magazines are full of thin models who have lost all their feminine curves, instead opting for a boy like figure.

But if you ask the majority of men what type of women they want as a partner they never say those who are skin and bone. Men want women who have feminine curves with breasts, not those whose bones stick into them when they cuddle up to them.

Interestingly men who are overweight seek to be an average size rather than slim, which is what women aim for. However it must be remembered that men also suffer from eating disorders including anorexia.  Sadly eating disorders in men are rarely considered, so many men go untreated for many years.  The international eating disorders support group called Overeaters Anonymous has many meetings around the world, including meetings specifically for men.
