Opening up through Online Counselling

For many people it can be incredibly difficult to talk about our deepest inner secrets and fears.  We believe that we can never tell anyone what is really bothering us and instead we bottle everything up until one day something happens when we can take it no longer.  Some people end up having a nervous breakdown while other people end up becoming addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling, food or sex to name but a few addictions.

I don’t think even the pioneers in online counselling had any idea how different this medium would be.  There have been many people who were totally sceptical because they believed that it would never work, when you could not see body language or reactions.  My experience is that online counselling sessions cover far more work and in far greater depth than most face to face sessions.  There is something different about writing about how you feel to someone who you will never see.  Of course before you begin working with an online counsellor you should check that they are the right person for you, that they have had professional training by looking at their educational certificates, and abide by standards set out by a professional organisation like the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

So why does online counselling allow people to really open up?  I believe there are many reasons but the one that is most common is due to anonymity.  When you work with an online counsellor you know that you will never bump into the person in the street, they will not end up moving next door to you and you will not have to sit in front of them sharing things that you find embarrassing or painful.  All this can be done in the privacy of your own home at any time of the day or night.  So if you want help during the middle of the night, all you have to do is send an e mail to your online counsellor.

Once you start writing about whatever is bothering you, it can be like opening the flood doors and the writing just pours out of you.  Many memories and events can be triggered, many of which previously didn’t seem to have much significance. Before you know it you have written about all the things that really bother you.  The great advantage of written words is that you can reflect upon it time and time again, so there is no need to rely upon a good memory.

I have witnessed some of the most incredible experiences occur where people have come to me only able to write one sentence requesting help for themselves. Within a very short space of time they are able to open up and tell me how they are feeling, what they are frightened of etc and we have been able to work together to find solutions.  Within a few sessions they are able to see how much they have really been bottling up over the years.  Sometimes all they need is one session whereas for more complex issues like eating disorders I have specifically designed packages that allow people to have daily help during the working week so that they have continued support when they need it most.

I stumbled upon an online counsellor by accident one day when I was searching the internet which ultimately led me to train as an online counsellor myself. Today it is my preferred way of working as I really believe that people can search deeper into their souls much quicker, so we work with what is really the issue rather than spending time going round and round in circles, skating around the issues.

If you are considering online counselling but are not quite sure whether it is right for you, why not read testimonials from other people who have used this method.  Alternatively you could sign up for one session and see how you feel about it. My experience has been that it is an amazing way of finding help. I passionately believe that in a few years time this will be one of the main ways to work with a counsellor.
