Choosing a family holiday

Are you thinking about booking a family holiday but unsure about where you want to go or what will suit your family best?  Today we have so much choice as many holidays that were once unaffordable are now an option for so many people.  But it is important that you make some key decisions or the holiday could turn out to be a disaster in so many different ways.

Begin by thinking about who will be going on your family holiday.  Have you got older children who will refuse to go or will anybody be pregnant, frail or have health needs to consider?  Maybe you want your extended family to come as part of the holiday or perhaps you have some friends you fancy going away with.  Once you have decided who will be going you can look at the individual needs of everyone.

Maybe you fancy a trip abroad but can’t afford the package holiday prices.  Why not consider luxury camping with Eurocamp, Canvas holidays or Keycamp.   I call this luxury camping because the tents are set up for you, proper beds are provided and there is even a fridge inside the tent. Most of these sites have organised activities for the children so that the adults can have some peace and quiet, while the children play with their newly made
friends. It is self catering but most places have a restaurant or take away facilities on site, along with a supermarket for all your catering needs.

Holiday cottages, either at home or abroad, offer a get away from the routine of life. If your family is young these can be ideal, or if you are going away with a group of friends.  Each year we go away with a group of friend for a week.  It must be quite a sight to watch us all as there are 8 adults and 12 children!  People look at me in horror when I say I am going away with 12 children, but it is always a fantastic holiday because we all have children of the same age.  The children don’t see each other that often, so they love to play together without squabbling and they occupy themselves for hours.  We always book holiday cottages next to each other and it has to have a swimming pool on site so if the weather is atrocious we have a source of entertainment for them.  Each evening the adults take it in turn to cook for all the adults so we have a lovely evening together.  This type of holiday works for groups with teenagers, however you may find that if you go alone as a family the teenagers will get bored easily.

Activity holidays at home or abroad can be a great way to have fun with your children as they get a bit older.  Many places will not take children under the age of 8 as most of the activities are not suitable.  These types of holidays vary from specific activities like walking, to holidays that offer you a whole range of activities throughout the week following a specific itinerary.  Children love these types of adventures and so do most adults.  I can’t wait until my youngest is old enough to do this.

Package holidays can be a fabulous way of letting someone else take care of all the organisational work.  Most travel companies like First Choice or Thomson’s holidays have brochures specifically for families. They guide you about which resorts are suitable for different age groups of children, along with the type of holiday that is on offer.  The holiday complexes often have kid’s clubs available so you can leave your children for a few hours during the day.  Many have organised activities for the children where they get to meet other children who are on holiday.  Evening entertainment is very family orientated so that your children can have as much fun as you.

Choosing a holiday that suits your needs is essential.  Make the most of these family holidays because it won’t be long before the children have grown up and no longer want to be part of your holiday plans.
