Christmas Excitement

As I wake early on Christmas morning, I remember the excitement I used to feel as a child.  The house was asleep but all I wanted to know was had Father Christmas arrived.  I didn’t want to disturb him in case he wouldn’t come back because I knew he only left his presents when the children were asleep. Although I know my daughter has seen him each year and has even spoken to him!

But the excitement didn’t stop as I got older. I clearly remember the time when I was seventeen. My Dad and I were both so excited we couldn’t sleep. We met downstairs in the lounge and couldn’t believe we were the only ones up, after all it was 4am, what was wrong with the others?  We sat downstairs looking at all the presents, it was so exciting.  I was allowed to open my stocking but imagine making us wait until after breakfast before we could open the presents under the tree.

This year I woke early.  Instead of lying in bed with lots of thoughts about different articles I could write, I decided to put pen to paper.  As I left the bedroom my husband warned me that the children would wake up.  I’d hardly written a paragraph before my girls came in with a burst through the door to exclaim “Santa had arrived”.  We sat around the computer desk as they excitedly opened up the presents.  It must be the first time in history that I have actually been able to video them opening the presents in their stockings.  Usually I awake to the sound of noisy children delighted with the gifts Father Christmas has brought them.

Christmas presents under the tree - oh what excitement
I think the excited look on the children’s face as they opened their gifts really put the final touch on Christmas.  They are so eager to know what is inside the wrapping paper.  Once the content is revealed they jump up and down exclaiming “Look Mummy”.  We follow the same routine when they open the presents under the tree.  The only difference is that I am desperately trying to keep track of what gifts four excited children have been given.  I learnt a long time ago not to try and open my own gifts as we would be left wondering who the presents were from, which could be quite embarrassing when it came to writing the thank you letters!

The amount of times I hear people say they can’t afford Christmas because they spend hundreds of pounds on presents for their children.  I personally choose to spend a small amount on each child, but make sure it is a gift well chosen.  They are just as delighted with their presents as if I had spent a lot of money.  With four children not only would we be bankrupt but we would soon run out of expensive presents to buy!  By the time you are buying presents for the third or fourth born you soon find it difficult as the older ones have already got most things which are then passed down.  Many relatives give them money for their savings accounts.  One day when they really need some money for a deposit on a house or to pay for university education, they will be able to spend it wisely. Lots of toys would have long been discarded but instead they will have the money at a time when they really need it.
