Are you too busy?

Is life packed so full that there isn’t a spare minute in your schedule? Do you run around all day like a headless chicken feeling so overwhelmed and never able to achieve what you want? If that sounds familiar then wouldn’t you like to trade your pace of life for a more relaxed pace so that you can actually enjoy yourself.

Of course we all have busy days when we seem to run from one appointment to the next, but if every day is like that then perhaps it is time to take a good hard look at what is actually going on. For many years my Dad used to say to me “you are on the treadmill of life…. when are you going to get off?”  Of course I used to say “well this is my life and it is bound to be non-stop because I have four children”. Even with four children I could do half the amount of things I pack into life. Eventually when there was never a spare minute in each day I took a long hard look at myself knowing I would face burn out or have to change.

Sign saying busy

There are many reasons why people are too busy.  Sometimes it is poor time management and for others it is running away from facing what is going on deep inside. I learnt very early on that if I kept myself busy it took my mind of things that bothered me. But you can’t run forever, one day you have to deal with things.

Perfectionists are often busy people who try harder and harder to make everything perfect. Never happy with what they have achieved they push the goals higher and higher, never being satisfied with their achievements.  Eventually they will realize there is no such thing as a perfect person.  Hopefully this will happen before they burn out.

Sometimes we need a visual picture that shows us where we spend our time. One exercise that helps me is to draw a circle and section it out according to the time I spend on different activities. If you see a large chunk of time is being spent in one particular area then it becomes evident that you need to look at what is going on.  The aim is to find balance in your life.

If we are not careful we can miss out on some of the most important things in our life. We can be too busy to see family and friends or we can be too busy to play with our children. I’ve never heard anyone who is dying say that they wished they had spent more time working or cleaning the house!  In yet so many of us spend endless hours working and never seem to realise that the longer they work the more ineffectual they become. Life really is for living.

List of things to do with a watch by the side - an article on

When we slow our pace of life we begin to notice all the beautiful things around us. We have time to watch the flowers and listen to the birds. We appreciate the family gatherings and learn to have fun. Believe me fun is not just something that children experience; as adults we are allowed to have fun too.

So if you are one of those people charging through life trying to achieve so much, take a few minutes to think if today was to be your last day, would this be the way you want to spend it?
